Ruin to visit Ferrette
Markers
Built in the 12th century by the powerful Ferrette-Montbéliard Family, the castle was developed with the town of Ferrette, around 1223. In the 14th century, the earldom passed into the hands of the Habsburgs, then to the Fuggers — wealthy bankers who modernised it to adapt its defences to artillery. However, during the Thirty Years’ War, the soldiers burned and dismantled the town and its castle which became the property of the King of France after 1648.
History
From the castle, a path leads to the entrance of a cave where the dwarfs lived; a charming people, very close to the people of the region whom they often helped in their jobs. But the long tunics they wore aroused the curiosity of the villagers, who mocked and laughed so hard on discovering their webbed feet that the dwarfs never wanted to return to the cruel world of humans.
Key points
The city is linked to the castle by walls. Beyond a fortified gate and a drawbridge opening onto the ruins of the lower castle, you reach the upper castle with its chapel and its multi-level residential tower, which offers a magnificent panorama over Sundgau.
