Ruin to visit Froensbourg Castle
Markers
Descended from the powerful Fleckenstein family, the Lords of Froensbourg appeared in the region from the 13th century. Refuge to a brigand knight who ransomed the villagers, the castle was attacked by a coalition of the surrounding towns that raised an army led by Jean de Lichtenberg in 1348. At the end of the 15th century, the castle passed into the hands of the Fleckensteins who restored it in 1484. The soldiers of Louis XIV dismantled it in 1677.
History
In times gone by, the castle was home to a giant so large that it could stand astride the Steinbach Valley, with one foot on each mountain.
Key points
In addition to the secret rooms and steps carved into the rock, the ruin is equipped with stairs and walkways that allow access to the different levels of the vestiges.
