Ruin to visit Haut-Ribeaupierre Castle
Markers
Recalled in the 11th century under the name of Altenkastel, the castle, which belonged to the Ribeaupierres, was besieged at the same time as Saint-Ulrich in 1288 by Rodolphe de Habsbourg, who stayed there several times at the end of the 13th century. In the 16th century, the castle was modernised and adapted to firearms; then it was used as a look-out tower before being abandoned at the end of the Thirty Years’ War.
History
The ardent Lords of Ribeaupierre locked up numerous celebrities of the time in the castle keep. In particular John Harleston, an unfortunate English knight, parading in the region towards the end of the 14th century with an imperial safe-conduct guarantee, but who was captured and ransomed by Brunon de Ribeaupierre.
Key points
The entrance to the castle is through a barbican tower and a beautiful gate equipped with a drawbridge. The ruins of the residential chamber are visible in the courtyard surmounted by the imposing circular keep which offers a clear view of the plain and the Vosges ridges.
