                        Markers
The primitive castle dates from the end of the 13th century. Passing into the hands of the Munch Family originating from Basel, it would be destroyed during the great earthquake of 1356. In 1461, the Reich de Reichensteins, who became co-owners of the castle, modernised it. It was then occupied by the Austrians, the Swedes and the French. In the 19th century, it was seized, bombed and dismantled by the Austrians. Only the keep was reused as an observation post by the Germans during the 2nd World War.
History
Its use as a royal, then a state prison earned it the nickname of Alsatian Bastille.
Key points
Its 13th century, rectangular-shaped keep, the remains of its chapel, its round towers, its well, its Renaissance sculptures and its panoramic view.
