Ruin to visit Lichtenberg Castle
Markers
A quote attests that as early as 1206 the castle was owned by the Lords of Lichtenberg, one of the most powerful families in northern Alsace. In the 16th century, Daniel Specklin, a famous architect from Strasbourg, modernised it to adapt its fortifications to the use of the cannon. In the 1990s, an architectural project gave new life to the monument with exhibition and show spaces, a shop and a cafeteria.
History
The tragic story of Hannemann and Lise recalls the impossible love between a villager from Steinbach and the Lichtenbergs heir, husband of the Countess of Linange. Madly in love, the lord installed his mistress at the castle and rejected his wife. To avenge his mother, the eldest son sieged the Lichtenberg and threw his father into the dungeon, whilst Lise threw herself off the top of the keep where she had taken refuge.
Key points
In turn it was a fortified castle, lord’s residence, fortress, refuge and seat of countless battles; this surprising place reveals all its mysteries in secret boxes, exhibitions and various shows which, in season, punctuate and complete the discovery trail.
