Ruin to visit Spesbourg Castle
Markers
Built in 1247 to control the neighbouring valley and abbey, the castle became the property of the Lords of Andlau in 1383. In the 16th century, Spesbourg was attacked by the bourgeoisie of Barr in order to evict a lord who had raped a villager. The castle was bequeathed to the city of Andlau in 1904 and listed as a historic monument in the 1960s.
History
On Holy Thursday in 1431, Steffan de Bavière (Steffan of Bavaria) arrived in Spesburg, which he found defenceless and neglected by the Lords of Andlau. He decided to take the place over, but within a few hours the people of Andlau rushed up with an army of 2,000 soldiers to take back their property and force the Bavarians to surrender without fighting.
Key points
Its large square 24-metre-high keep, and its interior courtyard, the fragments of polychrome frescoes still visible, its large, superbly preserved openings.
